HOWARD ENGSTORM is an outstanding personality of a trumpet playing world. He studied at the University of Huston, where he received a bachelor of music with honors in 1970. He was a trumpet teacher at the University of Calgary and at the Mount Royal College Conservatory of Calgary for 36 years. From 1972 to 2008 he was principal trumpet at the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and then until 2016 he was the principal trumpet emeritus and the assistant of the principal trumpet. He performed with music celebrities such as Andre Previn, Sir John Barbirolli, Charles Munch, Ernest Ansermet, Eric Leinsdorf and Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt. 

During his active musical life, he received many awards and honors, including the Leopold Stokowski Scholarship and awards for solo recitals of the University of Calgary. He is also an author of many publications in the field of playing the trumpet and is a revered professor at the University of Calgary, where he has held many important roles in the Department of Music. There he was, amongst other roles, a member of the examination committee and a member of the jury in competitions, as well as a lecturer and a trumpet teacher. He is currently a retired professor and Galileodolce artist.
